Film : Saddle Above the Axle

I have decided that with my first film experience I want to do the responsible thing and do things the right way. When I started working on Saddle Above  all i wanted to do is work on my skills and master my tools. I wanted to go around the City of Wichita and film things and make it look like a legit movie opening sequence. so I took all these establishing shots and came home and cut it up with excitement. So with all this footage I am thinking ok I need music. At the time I had just discovered this band the Menahan Street Band and there was a song on their album that was just the right mood so I plugged it in. Well I came up with this bad ass intro and wanted to build on to it and thats how this thing really took off. Now i have documentary in progress and a song  that I don’t have the rights too. So earlier today I contacted the publishing office of the Menahan Street Band for approval and use of the song in the opening sequence. I cant even imagine this film without the song in the begin but if not looks like I will be getting in the studio and producing a song that will work. The rest of the film contains songs clearances since I became aware that you don’t want to get your pants sued off all for 30 seconds of sound. So much little things need to be done or watched out for just so people can see your work with out the sweat of a lawyer writing a letter saying you messed up. Wish me luck!!! I have hit a stride with the Film and fairly close to wrapping it up. I have to start to thinking about how to close it out and what music to use for the credits .

Film : Saddle Above the Axle

So today more cut and edit, cut and edit, cut and edit , cut and edit , cuss and idiot… Today I may have gain a new respect for the editor. Im not  surprised its alot of work but one thing people may not think about is that 2 minutes of film can add up to 4 hours of work. Maybe its the documentary work tho. Nothing is planned in this style of shooting  so you can find yourself  watching hours of footage all for 5 seconds of time. Looking for that one shot to fill a couple of frames to make one section have continuity. For “Saddle Above..” I am working on this one section where I have great shots but the lighting is bad. Well, maybe it isn’t bad but the way I have graded the doc some of the darker shots are DARK and some of the correcting is exposing the grain. Its pretty cool looking but if I am going to leave it I want to make sure its in a good taste and looks purposeful and not lazy. This film is my first film that I filmed so there is alot of things learned in the moment and after the moment. In this unpredictable genre you have to figure out how to be in front of the actions and for Christ SAKE keep the camera rolling….

I finally decided to change the name of “Ghost of Grind” to “Saddle Above the Axle”. I originally went with ghost of grind because it was intended to be a skateboard documentary and over the Wichita Skate Park but while filming things changed. Now Saddle Above the Axle is the official title. Now I need to complete the post production of the film. Easier said than done. I’m over the half way mark and decide to recut parts of it. Dealing with BMX as a sport there is a desire to just show stunts than tell a story. I was becoming guilty of making a stunt movie than a short film. To solve that issue I recut to make storytelling more concise and using tricks as the filling. If the crust is good the pie will take care of itself. This is my first film so I  have to make sure I am giving effort in telling the story instead of filling the time.
